Light
Light is the primary subject of every work, before even the face or the landscape. What draws me is that precise moment when light reveals something that would otherwise be invisible — a fold of fabric, the warmth of a cheek, the silence of a morning.
I seek a light that is not decorative, but narrative. A light that has something to say.
Human presence
Faces have always stopped me. Not for their beauty in the conventional sense, but for what they contain — a story, a tenderness, a mystery. Painting a face is an attempt to capture something elusive.
I am particularly drawn to moments when the person is not performing — eyes lowered, gaze turned inward, a smile that is not for me.
The living world
Nature offers me the same questions as faces. A peony, a bird at rest, butterflies in the evening light — these are presences. They deserve to be looked at with the same attention, the same slowness.
I seek in the living world what I call a quiet dignity. Something that exists without needing to be justified.
